What is BIS Hallmarking Registration and New Rules for BIS Hallmark
In India, gold has always held a special place in the hearts of people, especially women. It is not just considered a beautiful accessory, but also a safe and secure investment during tough times. However, the concern of adulteration in the gold market has always been a challenge.
The BIS Hallmark is a mark of quality and authenticity, assuring customers that the jewellery they purchase meets the prescribed standards. The hallmark consists of several marks that provide essential information about the jewellery’s purity and origin. Let’s take a closer look at the different marks of a BIS Hallmark:
- BIS Mark or Logo: The BIS Mark or Logo is the primary mark that signifies that the jewellery has been certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards. It assures customers of the quality and purity of the metal.
- Purity Grade: The Purity Grade mark indicates the percentage of gold in the jewellery. It helps customers understand the purity level of the gold, such as 22 karat, 18 karat, etc. This mark allows customers to make informed decisions based on their preferences and requirements.
- Hallmarking Centre’s Mark: The Hallmarking Centre’s Mark is a unique mark that identifies the specific hallmarking center where the jewellery has been tested and certified. It ensures that the jewellery has undergone the necessary quality checks.
- Jeweller Mark: The Jeweller Mark is a unique identification mark of the registered jeweller or manufacturer. It helps trace the origin of the jewellery and holds the jeweller accountable for the quality and authenticity of the product.
- Marking Year: The Marking Year indicates the year in which the jewellery was hallmarked. It provides information about the age and authenticity of the piece.
New Rules For BIS Hallmark
In 2019, the Indian government made a significant announcement regarding the mandatory hallmarking of gold artefacts and jewellery across the country. As per the new rules, starting from April 1, 2023, the sale of gold jewellery without a Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number is prohibited. This regulation ensures transparency and protects consumers’ rights.
The HUID number is a six-digit alphanumeric code that must be embossed on all gold jewellery along with the BIS hallmark. It can be easily verified using the BIS Care App. If a jeweller has stamped a fake HUID code, buyers have a means to verify it and lodge a complaint against the jeweller, ensuring accountability and consumer protection.
These new rules for BIS Hallmarking registration and the introduction of the HUID code aim to establish transparency and trust in the jewellery market. They empower customers to make informed decisions, safeguard their interests, and protect them from fraudulent practices.
