In order to ensure quality, safety, and standardization in the food sector, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced the BIS Mark under the legislative Act of Parliament, known as the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1987. BIS plays a crucial role in formulating standards, certifying products, conducting testing and calibration schemes, and more. This blog will shed light on the three types of BIS Marks recognized by the Bureau: BIS ISI Mark, BIS FMCS ISI Mark, BIS CRS Electronic & IT Products, and BIS Hallmarking for silver and gold.

  1. BIS ISI Mark for Domestic Manufacturers and Importers: The BIS ISI Mark is a certification mark issued by BIS for various products manufactured or imported in India. This mark indicates that the product meets the required quality and safety standards set by BIS. It ensures that consumers receive products that are reliable, safe, and conform to the specified Indian standards. Domestic manufacturers and importers are required to adhere to these standards before affixing the BIS ISI Mark on their products. The BIS ISI Mark instills confidence in consumers as it signifies that the product has undergone rigorous testing and quality checks. It covers a wide range of products, including electrical appliances, cement, steel, packaged drinking water, and more.

2. BIS FMCS ISI Mark for Foreign Manufacturers : The BIS FMCS ISI Mark is specifically designed for foreign manufacturers who wish to export their products to the Indian market. This mark ensures that imported products meet the required quality standards of the Indian market. Foreign manufacturers need to obtain BIS certification and adhere to the relevant Indian standards before affixing the BIS FMCS ISI Mark on their products. The BIS FMCS ISI Mark enables consumers to identify products that have been tested and certified by BIS, providing assurance of quality and safety. It promotes fair competition and protects consumers from substandard or unsafe products.

  • BIS CRS Electronic & IT Products: The BIS CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) for Electronic and IT Products is aimed at regulating the import and sale of electronic goods in India. Under this scheme, certain electronic and IT products, such as mobile phones, laptops, LED lights, printers, and more, need to undergo mandatory testing and registration before they can be sold in the Indian market. The BIS CRS certification ensures that these products meet the essential safety, quality, and performance standards. It protects consumers from counterfeit or substandard electronic goods, reduces health and safety risks, and promotes the growth of the domestic electronics industry.

3. BIS Hallmarking for Silver and Gold: BIS Hallmarking is a certification mark that guarantees the purity and fineness of precious metals like silver and gold. It ensures that jewelry and other articles made from these metals meet the specified standards of purity. The BIS Hallmarking scheme provides consumers with accurate information about the quality of precious metal articles they purchase. The BIS Hallmarking certification involves testing the purity of the metal at BIS-recognized assaying and hallmarking centers. It helps to curb the circulation of adulterated or low-quality precious metal articles and protects consumers from fraudulent practices.
